You unfold the first parchment to reveal a second, and inside that, a third. Your spectator drops in a coin, a ring, a folded bill, or any small keepsake. You fold everything closed, pause for the story, then open the papers again. The item is gone.

That is only the first ending. With the same props you can make the chosen object transform into something completely different, or bring it back looking as though it took a detour through time.
